When a Hood Strikes the Windshield
A flying car hood can cause serious windshield damage in seconds. In this real example, a hood wasn’t properly latched and slammed into the windshield while driving. Here’s what happened — and what you should do if it happens to you.
The damage in this photo was caused when the vehicle’s hood wasn’t fully secured. While driving, it flew up and struck the windshield directly.
Situations like this are rare, but they show how quickly a windshield can go from clear to completely compromised.
Why the Windshield Didn’t Shatter Completely
Windshields use laminated safety glass: two layers of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer. When the glass breaks, that interlayer helps hold the fragments together and reduces scattering.
That helps explain why this windshield remained largely together after the hood struck it. It does not mean the damaged windshield was safe to keep using.
How Laminated Safety Glass Protects You
The plastic interlayer helps retain broken glass fragments, reducing how much glass scatters during an impact. It offers protection, but it cannot guarantee that glass will stay in place or that occupants will avoid injury. A severely cracked windshield can still obstruct your view, even when its pieces remain together.
Can This Type of Windshield Damage Be Repaired?
Damage from a hood striking and extensively cracking the windshield requires a full windshield replacement.
Some smaller chips and cracks may be repairable after inspection. The decision depends on the damage’s size, depth, location, and condition—not simply whether the glass is still holding together.
What to Do After a Hood Strikes Your Windshield
If the hood blocks your view or the windshield is extensively damaged, pull over safely as soon as you can. Arrange roadside assistance or towing rather than continuing with obstructed visibility.
Have the hood, latch, and related damage inspected before driving again. Replacing the windshield does not resolve the problem that allowed the hood to open.
